About Course

Discover the growing world of aquaculture and the opportunities it offers in South Africa.

This Level 1 course provides a practical introduction to aquaculture production in the South African context. It is designed for beginners, aspiring fish farmers, entrepreneurs, small-scale producers and anyone interested in understanding how the aquaculture industry works and where opportunities exist.

You do not need previous aquaculture or farming experience to start this course.

Throughout the course, you will build a strong foundation in aquaculture, starting with what aquaculture is, how the industry developed and why it is becoming increasingly important for food security, employment, rural development and economic growth.

You will explore both freshwater and marine aquaculture, including farming opportunities involving species such as tilapia, African catfish, trout, abalone, oysters and mussels. You will also be introduced to different production systems, including ponds, tanks, Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS), biofloc and aquaponics.

The course goes beyond fish farming itself and introduces learners to the wider aquaculture value chain, including hatcheries, fingerling production, fish feed, equipment supply, water-quality services, processing, transport, marketing, consulting and other potential business opportunities.

our Aquaculture Journey Starts Here

Aquaculture can range from a small pond or tank system to a sophisticated commercial operation. The purpose of Level 1 is to help you understand the industry before you invest.

By the end of the course, you will have a much clearer understanding of South African aquaculture, the different opportunities available and the areas you may wish to explore further as you progress towards practical production and commercial farming.

Start with the fundamentals. Understand the opportunities. Build towards becoming an aquaculture producer.

The tone of the questions and statements is very optimistic. Not a bad thing, but can be overdone. The questions are very easy, with typically 3 obviously wrong answers. However, one question was incorrectly marked - see my email.
